AIAS Bologna exists to ensure and promote the right of people with disabilities and of their families to a life that is happy and an integrated part of the community.

What we do
AIAS Bologna:

  1. Helps the families of children born with serious pathologies, providing support to enable them to bring up their children in a climate that is tranquil and happy, intervening both in the hospital and the home.
  2. Guarantees the right of both young and older children to play, socialization and independence through Play Centres and Assistive Technology Services.
  3. Supports disabled adults in the management of their everyday lives through home interventions or residential facilities.
  4. Provides opportunities for growth and social participation for adolescents and young adults with disabilities through daily activities in day centres
  5. Organizes recreational activities and leisure with outings and vacation stays for children, teens and adults of all ages.

In order to do so in the best possible way, AIAS Bologna:

  1. Works closely with the territorial network of social and health services and regional specialists
  2. Trains operators, develops and disseminates new skills, techniques and knowledge
  3. Supports public bodies, contributing to the definition of social and health policies and strategies through research, surveys and needs analyses.
  4. Draws on cutting edge experience and best practice in Europe and contributes to the promotion of policies favouring disabled people and their families and quality in the services at their disposal.

Objectives achieved
For people with disabilities and their families much has changed in Bologna over the last forty years. Thanks also to the work of our Association, which has been operative since 1962, many services have been created and rights have been recognised.
Currently the AIAS Bologna

  1. responds every day to the needs – in terms of assistance, support or training - of hundred of children and adults with disabilities, of their families and of professionals in the sector;
  2. has a recognised role in the landscape of services for people with disabilities in the city and  the province;
  3. provides specialized services, unique in the regional context;
  4. promotes innovations in Europe;
  5. participates in networks and work groups at local, national and European level  with the object of promoting the quality of life of individuals and of communities and the quality of services;
  6. has shown itself able to anticipate changes in the contexts in which it operates, and to adapt to them with flexibility;
  7. invests in the quality, training and motivation of its staff, guaranteeing them the best contract in the sector

New needs
Both old and new needs require the same commitment and determination to proceed to concrete actions which are coherent and integrated with one another.
Medical and technological progress is making it possible for a growing number of infants and children with serious illnesses and disabilities to survive, and is also increasing how long they can survive in conditions of extreme difficulty. These children require long term intensive care. Both in the hospital and in the home AIAS operators provide assistance to families on a daily basis in the care and support of their children and in finding a new equilibrium.
The increasingly hectic pace of life does not leave much room for those whose rhythm of development, learning and working is "special." A central concern of the Association is to identify and develop the possibility of personalized solutions in terms of appropriate methods and tools for the development of autonomy.
For AIAS Bologna, the opportunities offered by new technologies and our new awareness of how the living environment can be adapted have created what constitutes a priority area of intervention.
Like our society, the world of disability is becoming increasingly multicultural. AIAS Bologna is currently examining the problem of how to provide professional services in this new context and is evaluating the contribution that families and operators of non-Italian origin can make.
The quality of life in the absence of autonomy is an issue that unites people with disabilities and the elderly; AIAS is concerned with this problem, as it is also with that of how to develop living environments accessible to all.
European integration is an epoch-making process from which people with disabilities could benefit greatly if it means that a commitment to full inclusion and participation finds concrete expression in terms of raising the quality of services. AIAS Bologna follows closely, and participates in, the debate on European legislation and intends to increase its efforts to represent users and service providers at EU community level.
Non-profit
AIAS Bologna is an Association of people with disabilities, family members, friends and professionals. Everyone can make a contribution through their experience, needs and ideas. In this variety AIAS finds its strength, its capacity to design and operate - naturally in conjunction with public bodies of reference – quality services and innovative projects tailored to the needs of people.
The Association is not concerned with the pursuit of profit and every resource is dedicated to the realization of its mission. The utilization of all funding received is documented with transparency.
